  1. Yesterday, the snow just kept falling… by the time I woke up it had not just blanketed the area, it completely buried our town. With the ground cover at a ridiculous 12 feet, many were stuck in their homes with literally no way to make it out. I guess the only positive thing is we had not lost power and it seems the cell towers were holding up as well.

So, I put on some warm clothes, forced open the front door and started digging myself out. I was a little worried about our elderly next door neighbor so I tunneled to her house first. She must have been in shock when she received the knock on her door and I could tell by the look on her face she was a bit distressed. “How did you get here?” I let her know that I tunneled my way to her house first to make sure she was ok. “How will I get to my bridge game?” “How will I shop for food?” It took me a few minutes to calm her down but I let her know things would be all right. For the moment I asked her to sit tight while I made it back home to make some phone calls.

I called all the closest neighbors and other friends across town to see what their predicaments were. It was the same all over. So I let them know what I did for the neighbor. Everyone chipped in and we all started tunneling to each others doors, to the supermarket, to the police station, to the hospital. With everyone tunneling throughout the morning it didn’t take long till we had created miles of tunnel stretching throughout town. There was some concern about cave ins and such but it stayed cold enough throughout the tunnels to keep them firm. Our phones still worked as well so it was no trouble to create lifelines to assist the disabled and others who had difficulty dealing with the conditions. But in the end , everything worked out just fine.

The town dealt with this for a week and towards the end it seemed like one grand party. I think people were having more fun reconnoitering the tunnels like the explorers of yore than worrying about what should have been a bleak situation.

But like all good things, a week later it all came to an end. We were hit with some uncommonly warm weather after our successes in survival strategy and it all eventually just melted away. Many were sad, though many were happy as well but one thing is for sure, our community will weather any storm.

And the neighbor? Well, she made her bridge game.

      1. Yeah I’m not really a “writer” per se, but it’s something I’ve been pursuing the last 4 or 5 years as I write my own articles for my blogs. Most of the time I’m not happy with what I write but it does seem to get more comfortable the more I do it. I just kind of made that story up from scratch on demand so to say. Sure there are some volumetric and fluid dynamic issues I’m completely ignoring but the post probably would have been ignored had I put them in lol. Just continuing on my path to learning to write better so I’m doing more and more of these from various people who also request them. Thanks!
