In 1943, to conserve copper and nickel for the war effort, the US Mint began producing pennies made of zinc-coated steel. However, a small number of copper-alloy coins were inadvertently struck during that time. Today, a 1943 copper-alloy penny can potentially be valued at around $336,000.
