Around 1781, during his time as minister to France, Benjamin Franklin put pen to paper to tackle a rather unusual topic. Not liberty, diplomacy, or trade relations — but flatulence. “It is widely recognized,” the esteemed statesman and polymath noted, “that the digestion of our everyday food produces a significant amount of gas in the intestines of humans.” And it only gets more interesting from there.
