Carnations have a special connection with Mother’s Day.
Anna Jarvis, who urged President Woodrow Wilson to establish Mother’s Day as an official holiday, began the tradition of wearing a carnation to pay tribute to mothers. Typically, red or pink carnations are lovely gifts to celebrate your mom, whereas white carnations serve to honor a mother who has passed on.

In 1949, animal acts were banned from the Miss America pageant after Miss Nevada Carol Diane Lampe, a member of 4-H, wanted to bring in a cow to discuss cattle breeding. While she wasn’t allowed her cow, Miss Montana Carol Fraser was allowed to ride her horse during the talent portion.

When there’s a second new moon in a single calendar month, it’s often referred to as a black moon. It’s not an official astronomical term, though, and its definitions vary. Sometimes, it’s used to describe a third new moon in a season that usually has 2 new moons, or even the absence of a new or full moon in February.

Birthmarks are usually due to pigmentation. Cells growing in clusters or weirdly formed blood vessels. In centuries past, they were believed to form from a mothers ignored cravings or phobias and could be used as evidence someone was a witch.

A dentist helped introduce cotton candy to the masses. Dr. William Morrison, in a confectioner’s chair named John C Wharton, invented the first cotton candy machine in 1897. In 1921, a different dentist both patented his own machine and likely coined the term “cotton candy”.

Peter Graves, born on March 18, 1926, was primarily known for his serious roles in the TV series Mission Impossible, which debuted in 1966.
